Candlemass

Break the circle and all hell comes loose, the well of souls must stay sealed
Ancient force of light against the dark, the well of souls must stay sealed

Classic doom metal ahoy. Candlemass are certainly worthy of utmost respect, they took the Sabbath-esque epic doom style and moulded it into the genre we know and love today.

Nightfall sees the Swedish masters of gloom take their music into further doomy territory than they visited on their first release, the awesome Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Messiah Marcolin's voice fits the epic tone perfectly and Lars Johansson provides the chunky riffs we've now come to expect from doom metal.

And just look at that cover art. Stunning.

Probot

Ice Cold Man watches earth die, Eternal winter takes its reign, Devoid of light and filled with pain.

As I mentioned in Stormcast #2, Probot was a metal side project of Dave Grohl, famously the ex-drummer of Nirvana and frontman of the Foo Fighter. On the album, Grohl fulfilled his dream of teaming up with vocalists from 1980s and 1990s metal bands who influenced his musical tastes while he was growing up.

Each track has a different vocalist, with such notable legends as King Diamond of Mercyful Fate, Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost, Lee Dorian of Cathedral and Napalm Death, and the immortal Lemmy of Motörhead. And who can forget the hidden track, with the man himself - Jack Black.

This is a remarkable album crammed full of awesome tracks, with styles ranging from speed metal to doom metal. Highlights include Centuries Of Sin, Shake Your Blood, Big Sky, and Ice Cold Man.

Witchcraft

I was born past midnight
'neath the gloom of the darkest moon
Oh, my mother was a burning witch
And my father was a preacher, oh

Artist: Witchcraft
Album: Firewood
Genre: Doom Metal
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/witchcraftswe

Witchcraft was formed in 2000. These Swedish rockers play a Sabbath or Pentagram style of Traditional Doom Metal - good catchy riffs without the keyboard wankage, certain to interest fans of Spirit Caravan or The Sword. The band was originally formed to record a tribute to Pentagram, but was discovered by Rise Above Records and signed. They have played with such bands as Orange Goblin, and will be playing with The Sword and Clutch later this year. The group's third album is planned for release on Easter 2007. This is their second release, Firewood.

Tracklist:
1. Chylde of Fire (2:50)
2. If Wishes Were Horses (3:16)

Electric Wizard- Dopethrone

Electric Wizard

For pure, unadulterated doom, they don't come much heavier than England's Electric Wizard. The band rarely approaches even a midpaced tune -- they're slow, they're heavy, and they're cool. The self-titled debut sticks pretty closely to the classic doom format, while the later material is slightly more stoner/spacey in nature (though in general the style of the band is pretty consistent). Though occasionally on the monotonous side (Supercoven, for example), the sheer heaviness of it all makes these guys essential for extreme doom fans.

Ogre

Artist: Ogre
Album: Seven Hells
Genre: Doom Metal
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/ogre

Ogre are a Doom metal band that take their sound from both Traditional Doom and 70's Heavy Rock such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. They're almost kind of Stonery in the way they've set up their guitar tone. Anyway, these guys are amazing. They weave tales of war and history going back to Vietnam. Their music is very bass/groove driven like most doom bands. The vocals also come from the bassist, who wails into his mic VERY similar to Deep Purple. A very good listen, it should be a staple in anyone's doom collection. Fuck, these guys are so groovy.

Tracklist:
1. Dogmen (Of Planet Earth) (8:31)
2. Soldier Of Misfortune (10:02)
3. The Gas (6:30)
4. Woman On Fire (6:55)
5. Review Your Choices (Pentagram cover) (3:21)
6. Sperm Whale (7:21)
7. Flesh Feast (13:44)

Reverend Bizarre

He was dragging the cross to the Place of Skulls
Through the crowd that mocked him with all different ways
Under the heavy burden he cried for help
He looked at my eyes, I spat on his face!

Artist: Reverend Bizarre
Album: III: So Long Suckers
Genre: Doom Metal
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/reverendbizarre

Reverend Bizarre was a Doom Metal band comprised of three members - Sir Albert Witchfinder (vocals/bass), Peter Vicar (guitars), and Earl of Void (guitar/drums). The trio performed a few hoeavy, slow Traditional Doom Metal in the veins of Black Sabbath and Pentagram. They formed in 1995 and have put out two EPs and three full albums, III: So Long Suckers being the latest. Sadly, III: So Long Suckers is their final release, as Reverend Bizarre is disbanding after its release. Please enjoy this final album from the lords of doom.

Woods of Ypres

This is a quite superb album by Woods of Ypres, a Ontario based Black/Doom Band. The sounds on the album range from acoustic finger picking to slow-heavy electric guitar with harsh black metal style vocals. Lyrically, Pursuit of the Sun and Allure of the Earth is about Summer, the Earth, the woods, nature, sadness, and despair. their instruments and vocals create an arctic, earthy sound, including a mix of clean and harsh vocals, clean, acoustic, and electric guitars.
Pursuit is the most recent release by this band, though a new one is scheduled for a final pressing at the end of July 2007. This album was released by Krankenhaus records in 2004. There are no particular notes about this album regarding song structure.

Lamented Souls

Artist: Lamented Souls
Album: The Origins of Misery
Genre: Doom Metal
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/lamentedsouls

Hailing from Norway, Lamented Souls is an excellent Doom Metal band. Their sound is raw and heavy, with the vocals coming as haunting and emotional. The guitarwork is riff-heavy and the soloing is great. This album is a best-of/compilation of their tracks that have been recorded since their demo in 1993. The first 7 tracks were recorded in 1997 and have better production than the demo-quality ones that come last, which is why some of the songs are on there twice. Highlights from this album are
Hybris, Var, and, my personal favorite, Eternal Existence.

Tracklisting:
1. Essence of Wounds
(05:32)
2. Hybris
