Mogwai

Artist: Mogwai
Genre: Post-Rock
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mogwai

Mogwai is the legendary post-rock band from Scotland. Their music has become a staple in the post-rock sound and community. The band, formed in 1995, have been influenced by bands such as Slint, My Bloody Valentine, and Joy Division. Their albums hold true to the post-rock tradition of gradual crescendos and dynamic contrasts. Mogwai's sound also includes melodic bass lines and use of guitar distortion and effects to create atmosphere. These albums are some of the best. While Mogwai is not as heavy as Mono in many respects, they are still one of the best post-rock bands that I've heard.

Mono

Artist: Mono
Genre: Post-Rock
Website: http://www.mono-jpn.com/

Mono is a legendary Post-Rock band from Japan. Their sound epic, with hard, heavy sections and soft, gentle, serene intros and interludes.
Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined is the heavier of the two albums I'm posting, but both albums are amazing. Under The Pipal Tree focuses mainly on layered guitar melodies. My favorite tracks from these albums are Mere Your Pathetique Light, Karelia (Opus 2), 2 Candles, 1 Wish, and Lost Snow. I guarantee you'll find something you like from these Post-Rock giants.

Shelter Red

Artist: Shelter Red
Album: Masters of the Universe
Genre: Post-Rock
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/shelterrock

I must say, Shelter Red is the most impressive Post-Rock band I've ever encountered. If you like early Mastodon, you'll love these guys. Their sound is like a slightly less aggressive Mastodon, but the instrumentation is so much better. These musicians are much more talented than Mastodon's. The band is an instrumental band, so there's no typical Sludge hardcore vocal yells, which is good, but the band would probably sound just as good with vocals. Overall, this band will hit you like a tank. I highly recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of Sludge and Post-Rock.

Pelican

Australasia is Pelican's first full length album. It was published by Hydra Head Records on Nov. 4th 2003. The album is completely instrumental just like the rest of the band's work. Although M-A describes this album to have a Doom Metal feel to it, I feel that the music itself is pretty optimistic. Anyway, enjoy.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Artist: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Album: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To The Heavens
Genre: Post-Rock
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/godspeedyoublackemperorr

This is GY!BE's 2000 release. This album is more closely structured and composed like a symphony than a standard rock album. Each of it's four tracks is further divided into movements that fade into each other like a single song. The album is a double disc realease, but I've grouped both CDs together in one folder.

Neurosis

this is a rather good album of the band Neurosis, which I happen to have. I found myself highly impressed with it. It is not a debut album, and not their most recent, but it is a classic of the post-rock genre. it is their 7th album (2001), published by Relapse Records. the style demonstrated on this album is generally an epic and slow dirge. it uses the usual post rock structure of slow building to a climax. like really stoner sex. there are however occasional tribal sounding parts. incredibly heavy. a must have for fans of the genre. there are many beautiful melodic, atmospheric, and ambient parts in most of the songs. best song is probably Stones From the Sky.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

The car is on fire. And there's no driver at the wheel. And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides...

This is the debut album of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and a pioneering post-rock release. Godspeed are probably the most influential band of the genre and this album makes it clear why. F#A#∞ (F Sharp, A Sharp, Infinity) contains three compositions, broken down into movements. The music is interspersed with recorded narratives speaking of the coming apocalypse and the apparent corruption of America's government. The music itself is full of beauty and emotion, building from hushed silence, to atmospheric ambience to moving crescendo and back again.

If These Trees Could Talk

Artist: If These Trees Could Talk
Album: If These Trees Could Talk (EP)
Genre: Post-Rock/Instrumental
Myspace: www.myspace.com/ifthesetreescouldtalk

"Like the Six Parts Seven, another area group known for its rock soundscapes, Akron's If These Trees Could Talk proves in its self-titled six-song debut that you don't need vocals to ooze emotion. In fact, lyrics would only get in the way of the Trees' dense, flowing sound. This album emotes like Explosions in the Sky, rocks like Tool, and breaks and builds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The crystal-clear production and flawless musical performances make this a local instrumental album that stands high above the mire."
