Death

By request of my good friend ZeroofHate, a couple of Death albums for you today.

Human is the fourth album released by Death in 1991. It marked the beginning of a major stylistic change for Death. The actual sound of the album is much more technically accomplished and progressive than Death's previous efforts. The lyrics are now more introspective and meaningful as opposed to the gore based lyrics of the band's first two albums or the social commentary on Spiritual Healing. This new style would be more and more prevalent on all following Death albums.

Symbolic is the sixth album by American band Death. It was released on March 21, 1995 through Roadrunner Records. Like its predecessors, this album is progressive and technically advanced. It is notable that the average song length on this album is around five minutes, while it was around four minutes on Human and Individual Thought Patterns, perhaps due to slowed down song tempos closer to that of traditional death metal. As a result, the album was not quite as "technical" as its predecessors but more straightforward, "progressive". According to Metal-Rules.com, it is the seventh greatest extreme metal album of all time.

Queensryche

Beware of night for we all know he's loose again
Behind him lies the eyes of mercy and despair

Forever living out his nightmare comes to life
From Hell this spell will find it's way to you... tonight!

Artist: Queensryche
Albums: Queensryche, The Warning, Rage for Order, Operation Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land, Hear in the Now Frontier, Operation Mindcrime II
Genre: Progressive Metal
Official Site: http://www.queensryche.com/home.html

Queensryche are the founders and pioneers of the Progressive Metal genre. Formed originally as The Mob in 1981, the group changed the band name to Queensryche, named after their song
Queen of the Reich from their debut EP. Goeff Tate's piercing high vocals are some of the best around, and the guitarwork is absolutely fantastic, with guitarists Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo busting out incredible solos and riffs that grab your attention. The group has survived throughout the ages with hardly a scratch on them, maintaining the original line-up through most of their discography (founder Chris DeGarmo left the band shortly after their Hear in the Now Frontier album.) Queensryche still rocks out today, and with the release Operation Mindcrime II, the group is seeing a lot of publicity thanks to the answers supplied by the album to the questions left unanswered by Operation Mindcrime. The band has a cover album, Take Cover, set for release November 13th, 2007.

Noekk

You heard of honest Socrates
The man who never lied:
They weren't so grateful as you'd think
Instead the rulers fixed to have him tried.

Artist: Noekk
Album: The Water Sprite
Genre: Progressive Metal

Noekk is a very good Progressive Metal band with a depressive sound to their music. The band is comprised of Marcus Stock and Thomas Helm, both members of Empyrium. The two work together to create this beautiful album, The Water Sprite, released in 2005. Notable tracks include T.B.'s Notion, How Fortunate The Man With None, and The Riddle Seeker.

If anyone can find their 2006 release, The Grimalkin, please notify me.

Pain Of Salvation - BE

Artist: Pain of Salvation
Album: BE
Genre: Progressive Metal
Band Website: http://www.painofsalvation.com/

BE by Pain of Salvation is Daniel Gildenlow's brain child. This album, like all PoS albums, is a concept, but it contemplates the existence of God and mankind's place in the universe. The track Vocari Dei was created by having people call "God's answering machine" and leave messages to God himself. The album is highly orchestrated, but it still maintains their progressive style. Gildenlow's vocals range between haunting lows and high, wailing cries. The album is surely one of the best they've released, and while it may take a few listens to get the message, the album is extremely profound. Sit back, clear your mind, and prepare to be blown away.

Tracklist:
1. Animae Partus (I Am) (1:48)
2. Deus Nova (3:18)
3. Imago (Homines Partus) (5:11)

Devin Townsend

So just shut your face and take a seat
Because, after all, you're just talking meat
...And music? Well, it's just entertainment, folks.

Artist: Devin Townsend
Album: Terria
Genre: Progressive Metal
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/devintownsenddtb

Devin Townsend is the lead singer and guitarist for Strapping Young Lad. While SYL is Townsend's heavy, angry side, his solo work portrays a much more soft, thoughtful side, showcasing some of the best progressive metal around. Townsend's vocal abilities have been showcased by many, including Steve Vai. This is his fourth (and, in my opinion, best) solo album, Terria, released in 2001. Notable tracks include Earth Day, Canada, and Tiny Tears.

Tracklist:
1. Olives – (3:21)
2. Mountain – (6:32)
3. Earth Day – (9:35)
4. Deep Peace – (7:34)

Symphony X

Seems like forever that my eyes have been denied, Home, I'm dreaming of home

Oh my. Symphony X. Progressive metal at it's very best. Musically quite similar to other prog metal bands, such as Dream Theater or Shadow Gallery, but with more symphonic elements and a somewhat heavier sound. Probably one of my current favourite bands, so I'm posting what I consider their album.

The Odyssey is their sixth studio album. The stand-out here is almost certainly the 24-minute long epic based on Homer's Odyssey, which tells the story of the warrior Odysseus's return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. Now, considering that the album's focus is one long-ish song, you would be forgiven for thinking that the other songs are just filler. You would be wrong. The other songs are still awesome, with King Of Terrors being a highlight for me.

Devin Townsend

I don't think I need to introduce Devin Townsend. I really shouldn't have to. The man is a legend and his music is spectacular.

"Ziltoid The Omniscient, a four-dimensional alien has come to earth and is currently hovering five miles above Qatar. Beaming messages to the earth, including video, music, and words, His Omniscient-ness has one dimension up on us humans, allowing him control over time. But, in order to bend time he requires the perfect fuel — BLACK COFFEE — found in abundance on only one planet in the omniverse... Earth. He plays guitar and sings, is moody and a bit sensitive, with his first record due in late June. Surrounded by nymphs and prancing plasma beings, the album was produced by Devin Townsend in the hangar of the Ziltoidian space barge. All hail Ziltoid and his Infinity metal! Prepare your finest brew! Ziltoid doesn't want to destroy the earth now...he just wants to be known as the best guitar player and get lots of chicks."
-HevyDevy Records Newsletter

This is the main man's newest album, due for release in May. It sounds somewhere between Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, so think of a combination of The New Black and Synchestra and you wouldn't be far off. It's a great bit of music and the lyrics are wondrously silly, this is an excellent album and I pretty recommend it to anyone.
