Mad Flows Grishnackh

Artist: Mad Flows Grishnackh
Album: Africkvlt II - Temple of the Suns
Genre: ambient, noise
Label: http://www.myspace.com/ungluedrecords

Second ambient release that Dom aka "Mad Flows Grishnackh" aka therealfezmania aka a bunch of other pseudonyms has put out. The release strays between ambient and noisey sections (dark ambient?). It does more of the stuff people liked on the last one and less of the stuff people thought was fucking annoying. Most reviews so far have been fairly positive and I promise no one will sue you if you download it.

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers

Artist: Th' Legendary Shack Shakers
Album: Pandelirium
Genre: Psychobilly
Band Website: http://www.cockadoodledont.com/

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers are a psychobilly band that will blow your mind. They sound like punk rock music had ravaging buttsecks with bluegrass. They're in the same vein as Rev. Horton Heath, who just so happens to play guitar on a few of these tracks. The album mixes punk, folk, polka, and hillbilly influences to create their frantic music. It is said that they have a pretty wild stage performance as well. These guys have surely made a name for themselves in this genre. Notable tracks are Ichabod!, Somethin' In The Water, and Monkey On The Doghouse.

Maps & Atlases

Artist: Maps and Atlases
Album: Tree, Swallows, House
Genre: Indie, Math Rock
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mapsandatlases

Maps & Atlases is a math rock band from Chicago, Illinois. They sound similar to their influences Don Caballero and Hella. The guitarwork is crazy good. They're technical and yet easy to listen to. The vocals are a bit iffy, but they sound typical of the indie style. They're currently not under any label, so this album was a self-release put out on January 10 of this year. If you like technical guitars with progressive time-signature changes, this music is perfect for you. They're better than I expected them to be.

Tracklist:
1) Everyplace Is A House (3:58)
2) The Most Trustworthy Tin Cans (3:58)
3) The Ongoing Horrible (2:05)
4) Big Bopper Anthems (4:42)

Reverend Bizarre

He was dragging the cross to the Place of Skulls
Through the crowd that mocked him with all different ways
Under the heavy burden he cried for help
He looked at my eyes, I spat on his face!

Reverend Bizarre was a Doom Metal band comprised of three members - Sir Albert Witchfinder (vocals/bass), Peter Vicar (guitars), and Earl of Void (guitar/drums). The trio performed a few hoeavy, slow Traditional Doom Metal in the veins of Black Sabbath and Pentagram. They formed in 1995 and have put out two EPs and three full albums, III: So Long Suckers being the latest. Sadly, III: So Long Suckers is their final release, as Reverend Bizarre is disbanding after its release. Please enjoy this final album from the lords of doom.

Mogwai

Artist: Mogwai
Genre: Post-Rock
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mogwai

Mogwai is the legendary post-rock band from Scotland. Their music has become a staple in the post-rock sound and community. The band, formed in 1995, have been influenced by bands such as Slint, My Bloody Valentine, and Joy Division. Their albums hold true to the post-rock tradition of gradual crescendos and dynamic contrasts. Mogwai's sound also includes melodic bass lines and use of guitar distortion and effects to create atmosphere. These albums are some of the best. While Mogwai is not as heavy as Mono in many respects, they are still one of the best post-rock bands that I've heard.

King Crimson

Artist:
King Crimson
Albums: Discipline (Red), Beat (Blue), Three of a Perfect Pair (Yellow)
Genre: Progressive Rock
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/officialkingcrimson

King Crimson is perhaps one of the most influential Progressive Rock bands in existence. Started by Robert Fripp in 1969 (Fripp has been the only member of the band to remain with the group through its entirety), the group's sound has evolved over its 35-year span from basic rock with heavy jazz influence in its early stages to an impressive experimental progressive rock group, flush with incredible musicians and improvisations. The three albums Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair were created from 1981 to 1984 using a line-up of Robert Fripp on guitar, Adrian Belew on vocals and guitar, Tony Levin on bass guitar and Chapman Stick, and Bill Bruford on drums and percussion, and is perhaps the group's best line-up. The material produced in these three albums with this line-up is the most experimental of the band's music, and is pure ear candy.

Mono

Artist: Mono
Genre: Post-Rock
Website: http://www.mono-jpn.com/

Mono is a legendary Post-Rock band from Japan. Their sound epic, with hard, heavy sections and soft, gentle, serene intros and interludes.
Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined is the heavier of the two albums I'm posting, but both albums are amazing. Under The Pipal Tree focuses mainly on layered guitar melodies. My favorite tracks from these albums are Mere Your Pathetique Light, Karelia (Opus 2), 2 Candles, 1 Wish, and Lost Snow. I guarantee you'll find something you like from these Post-Rock giants.

Porcupine Tree

Let's sleep together, right now. Relieve the pressure, somehow. Switch off the future, right now. Let's sleep forever.

Review from drownedinsound.com -

"After forming two decades ago as an excruciatingly elaborate joke, Porcupine Tree have somehow become one of the most devastatingly poignant progressive rock bands around today. In what is essentially one continuous piece of music split into six movements, their ninth studio album holds a bleak perspective of modern society, telling a story of a desolate future through a teenager’s eyes.

Kicking off with the chaotic, mesmeric title track, their intent is apparent from the get-go. Carefully picked guitars give way to swirling synthesizers and irrepressible syncopations but ultimately the anxious candour of the lyrics cuts right through it all. The Hertfordshire-based four-piece have never been the cheeriest of souls but while a couple of more sanguine tracks were always hidden amongst the shadowy underworld they painted in recent tour de forces In Absentia and Deadwing. There is nothing like that here. There is no respite from this doom and gloom.

Some outstandingly gentle, string-laden melancholy can be found in ‘My Ashes’ and ‘Sentimental’ has delicate, otherworldly qualities to it, but the cornerstone of the album is the snarling beast that is ‘Anesthetize’. At nearly 18 minutes it manages to reach majestic peaks of devastating sonic grandeur shortly after the twinkling opening where Steven Wilson’s plaintive vocals intensify his brooding lyrics and add a cold frisson to the already menacing atmosphere. A rare cameo from Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson is lovely but easily missed with so many imposing and spectacular climaxes found here.

Fear Of A Blank Planet is a lonely and ambiguous tale fearing for the future, spoken softly against a complex arrangement of symphonic swirling guitars and absolutely watertight drumming. The result is an often crushingly heavy masterpiece that has true meaning with or without the music. It’s a rare thing these days but Porcupine Tree seem able to do it time and again. This album is no exception."

Fantastic album. Listen to it or I beat you, 'kay?

Isengard is a Black Metal band from Norway brought to you by Fenriz of Darkthrone. Vinterskugge is a compilation album of his songs since Isengard's creation in 1989. The sound is raw, and the quality isn't that great, but I find that the songs are catchy. Plus, there's a hell of a lot of songs, so you're sure to find at least a few songs that you like.

Devin Townsend

Artist: Devin Townsend
Album: Terria
Genre: Progressive Metal

Devin Townsend is the lead singer and guitarist for Strapping Young Lad. While SYL is Townsend's heavy, angry side, his solo work portrays a much more soft, thoughtful side, showcasing some of the best progressive metal around. Townsend's vocal abilities have been showcased by many, including Steve Vai. This is his fourth (and, in my opinion, best) solo album, Terria, released in 2001. Notable tracks include Earth Day, Canada, and Tiny Tears.

I bring you Gogol Bordello! This is a gypsy punk group fronted by Eugene Hutz, a Ukrainian immigrant, and backed by a whole slew of immigrant musicians. The band features upbeat songs, with a kind of "punk rock meets folk" feel. Dominant instruments include accordians, violins, and even a fire bucket! The music itself is punk, but later in the album Hutz starts to show his heavy Spanish influence. You really need to see these guys live to get the full experience.

Edge of Sanity

Artist: Edge of Sanity
Album: Crimson
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/edgeofsanity01

Edge of Sanity pushes the envelope with this release. Crimson is a single track of 40 minutes in length. But this isn't 40 minutes of repetitive riffs. It's almost like it's a compilation of ideas woven together. The song starts out slow, picks up pace, kicks into high gear with catchy riffs, then slows down again for the outro. The song features several guests including Mikael Akerfeldt on backing vocals during one part of the song. My personal favorite section is at about 12:40. For fans of Melodic Death Metal, this album is a staple in anyone's collection.

Freedom Call

Forever in a land of grace and glory
My soul is free of pain
And the children tell us stories
That harmony remains

Artist: Freedom Call
Album: Stairway to Fairyland
Genre: Power Metal
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/callforfreedom

Freedom Call is a Symphonic Power Metal band from Germany. The group formed during an off-period for drummer Dan Zimmermann's main band, Gamma Ray. The group recorded their first album,
Stairway to Fairyland, in 1999, and made their official debut in France as a support band for the touring Edguy and Angra. Overall, Freedom Call is Symphonic Power Metal at some of its best - the synth is an integral part, but the lack of a high soprano keeps them seperate from Visions of Atlantis or Nightwish and puts them in the ranks with some of Power Metal's greatest. This is their first album, Stairway to Fairyland. Notable tracks include Tears Falling, Graceland, and Holy Knight.
