Thin Lizzy

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in the town

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak

So don't you be around

Thin Lizzy are a totally fucking awesome hard rock band from Ireland. Their lead singer, Phil Lynott, was a rad dude but he was just too rad. In fact, he was so rad that he died. In Dublin they remember him as the raddest black dude ever to be Irish and built a statue of him and everything. Everyone agrees that the statue is hella rad.

This album is a selection of live recording made for the BBC, and were originally aired by John Peel. John Peel was also so rad that he died of over-radness. All of these songs are hella rad, especially Emerald, Bad Reputation and Vagabonds Of The Western World.

Maybe if you download this and listen to it you might be able to learn some pointers on how to some day be as rad as Thin Lizzy.

Sortilège

Dans un univers
Où l'homme n'a guère
Le droit de citation
Vivent des guerrières

Artist: Sortilège
Album: Métamorphose
Genre: Heavy Metal

Do you like leather and metal? Then you'll love Sortilège. They're pretty much a French version of Judas Priest, and as bad as that sounds (FRENCH?!?!?), this band completely redeems that poor country. With Christian Augustin on vocals (entirely in French) that can pierce as high as Halford himself and guitar work that shows great prowess, these guys are ballsy old-school heavy metal. All Judas Priest fans must get this band. Even the French Power Metal band Manigance (who I laud as one of the best Power Metal acts around) hail this band, and have performed a cover of the Sortilège song "Messager". Unfortunately, I can't get my hands on the CD with Messager, Larmes De Héros, so you'll have to do with Métamorphose for now.

Tracklist:
1. D'ailleurs - (2:32)
2. Majesté - (4:53)
3. Hymne à la Mort - (5:30)
4. Légende - (2:45)
5. Nuit des Limbes - (2:25)
6. Civilisation Perdue - (2:12)
7. Délire d'un Fou - (5:25)
8. Cyclope de l'Etang - (3:58)
9. Métamorphose - (4:38)

The Lord Weird Slough Feg

The curse of double helix brings only racial wars, And though you may not feel it, the air is filled with spores!

With a name like that how can you not want to check out this band? The Lord Weird Slough Feg (recently shortened to the much simpler, but just as baffling, Slough Feg) make a hybrid of heavy metal, power metal and folk metal with some elements of doom metal thrown in time-to-time for good measure.

The album I present to you this evening is a bit easier to define as it lacks the folkish oddities of their earlier releases, but don't expect straight forward heavy metal. What you should expect is a delicious soup of chunky riffs and tasty solos, in a broth of Mike Scalzi's unique vocals. All of the instrumentation is as tight as your little sister and the production is much cleaner than my conscience after what I did to her. God Lord this is a rambling and nonsensical review. The lyrics are based on an obscure 1970's RPG, from which the album lends it's name. It weaves an odd and often confusing sci-fi tale of space pirates, mad scientists, dog-like aliens, genetic experimentation, mutation and revenge. Awesome. Awesome to the max.

Listen now so I don't have to keep writing shit.

Iron Maiden

Big thanks to Mad Flows for uploading this one.

Courtesy of some other blog whose name I can't remember and doesn't really matter as it's currently out of commission. This rather recent Maiden bootleg features the new Maiden album played live in its entirity. The show is finished up with some other Maiden classics. The performance is excellent and as far as bootlegs go the sound quality is quite good, though the crowd is still a little overpowering at times and sometimes Bruce is a little buried in the mix. I wouldn't be surprised to see this set list re-appearing on Maiden's next live album.

I saw Iron Maiden play this same set in Dublin last December, and it was stunning. Enjoy.

Probot

Ice Cold Man watches earth die, Eternal winter takes its reign, Devoid of light and filled with pain.

As I mentioned in Stormcast #2, Probot was a metal side project of Dave Grohl, famously the ex-drummer of Nirvana and frontman of the Foo Fighter. On the album, Grohl fulfilled his dream of teaming up with vocalists from 1980s and 1990s metal bands who influenced his musical tastes while he was growing up.

Each track has a different vocalist, with such notable legends as King Diamond of Mercyful Fate, Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost, Lee Dorian of Cathedral and Napalm Death, and the immortal Lemmy of Motörhead. And who can forget the hidden track, with the man himself - Jack Black.

This is a remarkable album crammed full of awesome tracks, with styles ranging from speed metal to doom metal. Highlights include Centuries Of Sin, Shake Your Blood, Big Sky, and Ice Cold Man.

Dio

It's always worse at night, When darkness kills the light, We're in the danger zone

Disappointing. This Stormblog has been up for a few months now, and no-one has posted any Dio. The shame of it. Time to right that serious wrong. Ronnie James Dio has rocked for a long, long time. He has songs of wildebeest and angels, he has soared on the wings of a demon.

The Last In Line was released in 1984, and I consider to be equal to the more popular Holy Diver. It's banged full of juicy tunes, with the highlights being all of them.

Fact - You're not allowed to call yourself a fan of heavy metal if you don't like Dio.
It is against the Law.
