Otyg

Artist: Otyg
Album: Sagovindars Boning
Genre: Folk/Viking Metal
Last.fm: http://www.last.fm/music/Otyg

Otyg is a disbanded side-project of Vintersorg. The music is what you'd typically think Folk metal would sound like. It's rich in Scandinavian heritage and features instruments such as violin, lute, willow flute, jaw harp (boing boing!), and of course, guitar, bass, and drums. The songs are catchy and memorable, pretty much something you can easily dance along to. The album even features a cover of the legendary
Dio song, Holy Diver. The vocals are nice and chanty with the occassional female vocal that tends to hide within Folk and Gothic metal. It's a very good listen, and I suggest it if you like catchy music, or if you're just looking for something to bounce along with while drinking! Damn, I love that jaw harp! *boing boing*

Hibria

I don't wanna have this feeling any more, Not accomplish what I fought for, Now it's my turn to change it all...

Hibria are a power metal band from Brazil who put a lot of emphasis into speed and technicality, but these dudes are no Dragonforce. They blow Dragonforce clear out of the water. They've only released one full-length album so far, Defying The Rules, and is a masterpiece. I might even go as far as to say that it ranks alongside Judas Priest's Painkiller. It's just that good.

The album is set in a dystopian future and tells the story of a band of rebels lead by the Steel Lord who fight against the oppressive Faceless In Charge. From the albums awesome opening, Steel Lord On Wheels, you'll be hooked on the killer riffs, insane drum work and Iuri Sanson's incredible vocals.

Seriously listen to this album. The speed and technicality should grab any fan of Thrash or Speed Metal, the soaring vocals and melodies would intrigue even the most sceptical of Power Metal fans and Progressive Metal listeners will love the Rush-like proggy bits.

Lamented Souls

Artist: Lamented Souls
Album: The Origins of Misery
Genre: Doom Metal
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/lamentedsouls

Hailing from Norway, Lamented Souls is an excellent Doom Metal band. Their sound is raw and heavy, with the vocals coming as haunting and emotional. The guitarwork is riff-heavy and the soloing is great. This album is a best-of/compilation of their tracks that have been recorded since their demo in 1993. The first 7 tracks were recorded in 1997 and have better production than the demo-quality ones that come last, which is why some of the songs are on there twice. Highlights from this album are
Hybris, Var, and, my personal favorite, Eternal Existence.

Symphony X

Seems like forever that my eyes have been denied, Home, I'm dreaming of home

Oh my. Symphony X. Progressive metal at it's very best. Musically quite similar to other prog metal bands, such as Dream Theater or Shadow Gallery, but with more symphonic elements and a somewhat heavier sound. Probably one of my current favourite bands, so I'm posting what I consider their album.

The Odyssey is their sixth studio album. The stand-out here is almost certainly the 24-minute long epic based on Homer's Odyssey, which tells the story of the warrior Odysseus's return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. Now, considering that the album's focus is one long-ish song, you would be forgiven for thinking that the other songs are just filler. You would be wrong. The other songs are still awesome, with King Of Terrors being a highlight for me.

Alkemyst

This is the first full-length album from French Power Metal band Alkemyst, and it is an absolute killer. The songs here are packed full of awesome speedy riffs and tasty solos, my highlights being Still Alive, Passage and the epic Nameless Son. Oh, and be sure to wait past the silence in the final track for some downright bizarre techno-bluegrass Gallic randomness.

A properly delicious album, one my favourites in fact, I recommend it to all of you.

Pelican

Australasia is Pelican's first full length album. It was published by Hydra Head Records on Nov. 4th 2003. The album is completely instrumental just like the rest of the band's work. Although M-A describes this album to have a Doom Metal feel to it, I feel that the music itself is pretty optimistic. Anyway, enjoy.

Devin Townsend

I don't think I need to introduce Devin Townsend. I really shouldn't have to. The man is a legend and his music is spectacular.

"Ziltoid The Omniscient, a four-dimensional alien has come to earth and is currently hovering five miles above Qatar. Beaming messages to the earth, including video, music, and words, His Omniscient-ness has one dimension up on us humans, allowing him control over time. But, in order to bend time he requires the perfect fuel — BLACK COFFEE — found in abundance on only one planet in the omniverse... Earth. He plays guitar and sings, is moody and a bit sensitive, with his first record due in late June. Surrounded by nymphs and prancing plasma beings, the album was produced by Devin Townsend in the hangar of the Ziltoidian space barge. All hail Ziltoid and his Infinity metal! Prepare your finest brew! Ziltoid doesn't want to destroy the earth now...he just wants to be known as the best guitar player and get lots of chicks."
-HevyDevy Records Newsletter

This is the main man's newest album, due for release in May. It sounds somewhere between Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, so think of a combination of The New Black and Synchestra and you wouldn't be far off. It's a great bit of music and the lyrics are wondrously silly, this is an excellent album and I pretty recommend it to anyone.

Callisto is a post-metal/rock band from Finland, which is a bit different from most European metal releases. This album is a little wierd. As far as post-metal goes, it's a solid release, but I'm not sure everyone will like it. In the first song, "Wormwood," there's a saxophone player. This album is great to chill to because it has lots of ambience, but still knows when to kick it into heavy gear.

Arcade Fire

Purify the colors, purify my mind, and spread the ashes of the colors over this heart of mine.

Okay, this may not be a post-rock album, but a fan of post-rock should dig it for the orchestral instrumentation and classical influences. It would act as very good gateway-album into the world of post-rock for those who are inclined towards indie rock.

Funeral is Arcade Fire's first full length album. As the title would suggest, the songs are mostly about death, but they approach the subject in an optimistic fashion rather than sounding glooming and depressive. The album has a strong instrumental focus with a lot of emphasis on strings.

Neurosis

this is a rather good album of the band Neurosis, which I happen to have. I found myself highly impressed with it. It is not a debut album, and not their most recent, but it is a classic of the post-rock genre. it is their 7th album (2001), published by Relapse Records. the style demonstrated on this album is generally an epic and slow dirge. it uses the usual post rock structure of slow building to a climax. like really stoner sex. there are however occasional tribal sounding parts. incredibly heavy. a must have for fans of the genre. there are many beautiful melodic, atmospheric, and ambient parts in most of the songs. best song is probably Stones From the Sky.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

The car is on fire. And there's no driver at the wheel. And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides...

This is the debut album of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and a pioneering post-rock release. Godspeed are probably the most influential band of the genre and this album makes it clear why. F#A#∞ (F Sharp, A Sharp, Infinity) contains three compositions, broken down into movements. The music is interspersed with recorded narratives speaking of the coming apocalypse and the apparent corruption of America's government. The music itself is full of beauty and emotion, building from hushed silence, to atmospheric ambience to moving crescendo and back again.

"Like the Six Parts Seven, another area group known for its rock soundscapes, Akron's If These Trees Could Talk proves in its self-titled six-song debut that you don't need vocals to ooze emotion. In fact, lyrics would only get in the way of the Trees' dense, flowing sound. This album emotes like Explosions in the Sky, rocks like Tool, and breaks and builds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The crystal-clear production and flawless musical performances make this a local instrumental album that stands high above the mire."
