Kamelot

You know just who I am, don't be so distant, because when you're lost, I am solely there to share your grief.

Kamelot are a power metal band from Florida. They incorporate a lot of progressive and symphonic elements into their music - which is particularly evident in the album I have for you today.

The Black Halo is the band's seventh studio album, and is regarded one of their best by most fans. It is a concept album based on Goethe's Faust, concluding the story that started in the album Epica. There are also plenty of guest musicians on here, including Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir, Jens Johannson of Stratovarius and Simone Simons of Epica

I consider this album to be a pinnacle of the power metal genre, so definitely grab it if you haven't listened to it.

Chur is a Pagan Folk Metal band from Ukraine. This band is the brainchild of one man - Chur. While his name obviously a moniker, Chur's skills at instrumentality and his knowledge of Ukrainian folk music is not fake. The man singlehandedly plays guitar, bass, drums and other percussion, and keyboards, as well as performs the vocals. He invites two other female singers to aid him on certain tracks, but aside from them, he is alone in the band. Marvel at his only release so far, Brother Wind.

Deathspell Omega

O Satan, I acknowledge you as the Great Destroyer of the Universe. All that has been created you will corrupt and destroy.

Deathspell Omega are a black metal band from France. The lyrical content of their music primarily deals with satanism (Black Metal LOL).

Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice was released in 2004 to a big mess of hype and critical acclaim. Their earlier music was raw-as-a-badger's black metal, similar to Darkthrone, but from this release they have taken a more Avant-Garde turn, with influences such as gregorian chant and an improved production.

Fucking listen to it. It's great. I don't even like black metal very much and I love it.

Manilla Road

Yet another excellent piece of work, this time by Epic Metal pioneers Manilla Road. I dare say that Manilla Road were, indeed, the originators of the genre, taking heavy metal and mixing in doom, thrash, and power elements, and, among other things, adding a certain sound to their music that can only be identifyed as EPIC. In addition, Mark Sheltons original styles play a major part in
his composition, and his typical guitar shredding dominates the solos.
Crystal Logic (original 1983, Black Dragon Records; reissue 2002, Iron Glory records (containing a bonus track)) is a classic of the Epic genre, beginning with "Prologue," an intro that provides a atmosphere which adds to the all around epicness of the album, fading into the classic "Necropolis," which no fan of epic metals should go without hearing. The album continues through a variety of other styles, some slow, doomy ones, others faster, and bordering on thrashy (though that is not really a dominant style on the album), and finally finishing with the most epic song on the album, "Dreams of Eschaton," a 12 minute long track, a large part of which is awesome soloing with assistance from a recording/delay pedal (skill is still present, i assure you). In conclusion, this is an awesome album of epic porportions.

Woods of Ypres

This is a quite superb album by Woods of Ypres, a Ontario based Black/Doom Band. The sounds on the album range from acoustic finger picking to slow-heavy electric guitar with harsh black metal style vocals. Lyrically, Pursuit of the Sun and Allure of the Earth is about Summer, the Earth, the woods, nature, sadness, and despair. their instruments and vocals create an arctic, earthy sound, including a mix of clean and harsh vocals, clean, acoustic, and electric guitars.
Pursuit is the most recent release by this band, though a new one is scheduled for a final pressing at the end of July 2007. This album was released by Krankenhaus records in 2004. There are no particular notes about this album regarding song structure.

Rush

Artist: Rush
Album: A Farewell To Kings
Genre: Progressive Rock
Band Webpage: http://www.rush.com

A Farewell To Kings is Rush's fifth album. It features a whole slew of epic tracks. The first and title track begins with an acoustic finger-picked intro followed by hard rock. Xanadu (the title is taken from Coleridge's Kubla Kahn. This track happens to be my favorite of the album) begins with a very epic intro with guitar harmonics, an E pedal tone, and drumming, but soon kicks into high gear. The lyrics are also taken from Kubla Kahn. Cygnus X-1 follows the fictional space voyage to Cygnus X-1, which is considered to be one of the most likely black hole candidates in the universe. The other tracks, while not quick as epic, help attribute to the whole album's feel.

Jethro Tull

Sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent. Snot running down his nose, greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes. Drying in the cold sun, watching as the frilly panties run. Feeling like a dead duck, spitting out pieces of his broken luck.

Aqualung is the fourth, and best known, album by Jethro Tull. The music is a mixture of hard rock and folk melodies while the lyrics refer to some of societies seedier characters (Aqualung is about a homeless paedophile, Cross-Eyed Mary is about an under-age prostitute) and also presents some Pro-God but Anti-Church musings about faith and religion.

This is one of my favourite albums, so I deeply recommend it to everyone.

Blind Gaurdian's fourth full release is a powerhouse album. It goes from heavy, speed metal to soft acoustic ballads. Solefald

World I called Yggdrasil, Death I called end of all

Solefald is a Post-Black/Avant-Garde Metal band from Norway formed by Lazare Nedland and Cornelius Jakhellan.

An Icelandic Odyssey is a pair of concept albums that tell the story of Bragi, an Icelandic skald who has an affair with the queen but is accused of raping her and must flee or face execution. On the albums the band has said "Solefald was experimenting when everybody was being true. Now that things are changing and that we've pushed the experiment quite far already, we wanted "Red For Fire + Black For Death" to be our attempts at being true. This will be a true Nordic Viking Metal album."

These albums are excellent. You should listen to them. That is my advice as a doctor.

Beastie Boys

Let it flow, let yourself go, slow and low, that is the tempo

The Beastie Boys are a hip-hop act from New York City who found success with their rock-influenced style of rap music.

Licensed To Ill was their debut album and is often hailed as one the best hip-hop records of all time. It's certainly one of my favourites.

And an interesting note, Slayer's Kerry King provides guitar on the song No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn, which is itself a reference to the Motörhead live album No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith.

Album: 11 Dreams
Genre: Power/Prog ( I think, not sure though...)
Year: 2005

One of my all-time favorite albums. Mercenary is a band that has changed it's style alot of times, but I think I like this one the most. The most interesting thing about this album are the vocals, since there are three vocalists that each do their own part. There are two clean vocalists( one doing the lead, one doing the harmonic part) and one doing the growls and screams. It sounds very well together and gives a very interesting effect.

It's hard to describe how this band sounds like, cause they have such a unique sound. Hear for yourself.

Kiuas

Somewhere within the darkest moors, between black cliffs like the devil's teeth, a child was born with a warrior's heart, son of the stars, of ice and flame

I love this album so much I often find it creeping into my mind on the vinegar strokes.

But enough of that.

Kiuas are a power metal band from Finland, but expect none of the flowery nonsense of fellow Finns Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. These guys pack a serious punch, grouping them with the more 'extreme' power metal bands like Children Of Bodom and Norther. But don't compare them to those losers! Kiuas have wisely largely eschewed the faceless death grunts of their peers in favour of the strong, clean voice of Ilja Jalkanen, who compensates for his limited range with his obvious enthusiasm for the material. Secondly, Kiuas have cleverly mixed in elements from other styles of metal too, from the occasional blastbeat and black-metal riffing sequences in the title track and On Winds of Death We Ride to the traditional Finnish music-inflected Across the Snows to the groovy stomp of Thorns of a Black Rose to the beautifully orchestrated And the North Star Cried. But the serious highlight is the thunderous and painfully awesome Warrior Soul, a top-notch pagan anthem with what is possibly the catchiest chorus ever.

Oh, and for the curious, Ukko was the Finnish god who specialized in storms and lightning. I didn't know that until recently. The title track makes a whole lot more sense now.

Arathorn

Artist: Arathorn
Album: Niemals Kroenender Als Was Einst War
Genre: Black Metal
M-A Page: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=3060

This band blows my mind. The atmosphere created by this band in overwhelming. The style is ancient and medieval, reminiscent of walking through the streets during the Plague years, dead bodies strewn across the land. The special thing about this sound is that, unusually, the tremolo-picked guitars lend to the background while the keyboards (sometimes a church organ) take control of the melody. The vocals sound like an elder wiseman weaving a tale of death and sorrow. I recommend this album for anyone who likes Keyboard-oriented Black Metal. Hell, I want everyone to get this. This album is a must-have for anyone's music collection.

Shelter Red

Artist: Shelter Red
Album: Masters of the Universe
Genre: Post-Rock
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/shelterrock

I must say, Shelter Red is the most impressive Post-Rock band I've ever encountered. If you like early Mastodon, you'll love these guys. Their sound is like a slightly less aggressive Mastodon, but the instrumentation is so much better. These musicians are much more talented than Mastodon's. The band is an instrumental band, so there's no typical Sludge hardcore vocal yells, which is good, but the band would probably sound just as good with vocals. Overall, this band will hit you like a tank. I highly recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of Sludge and Post-Rock.

To know where we are going, we must look at where we are coming from. And so, I present The Rolling Stones. One of the most influential bands

Here is the compilation 'Forty Licks'. Forty tracks covering their entire career, combining material from the band's formative years in the 1960's to newer tracks recorded in 2002.
